Conducting programme
IV Córdoba International Opera Studio include a Conducting Programme, designed for young conductors who wish to develop a practical and professional approach to operatic conducting through direct work with singers, répétiteur and orchestra, within the framework of a full operatic production.
The 2026 edition will focus on Le nozze di Figaro by W. A. Mozart and will combine advanced preparation, practical rehearsal experience, and professional podium time in real working conditions.
A maximum of 4 conducting students may be admitted, although the ideal number, as in previous editions, is 2 participants.
The Conducting Programme is structured in two modules: a first intensive preparatory module in Madrid, taking place on May 23–24, 2026, and a second module in Córdoba, from June 6 to 14, 2026, consisting of integrated practical work within the main programme.

FIRST MODULE – MADRID
Intensive 12-hour preparatory module
May 23–24, 2026
The first module will take place in Madrid and will consist of an intensive theoretical and practical introduction to the study of an opera.
Its purpose is to provide conductors with a solid and efficient methodology for approaching operatic repertoire in a rigorous and practical way, enabling them to prepare any score in the shortest possible time and with full artistic awareness.
The contents of this module include:
Score preparation
General tempo planning in Le Nozze di Figaro.
To work with singers.
Practical advice on conducting technique.
Practical guidance for work in the pit.
Opera production planning, from casting choices to rehearsal structure and overall musical preparation.
The module will also include practical work with piano, focused on the fundamental principles of operatic conducting in: recitativo acompagnato.
In addition, each conductor will begin the preparation of Le nozze di Figaro together with the Maestro well in advance, allowing enough time to absorb and consolidate the musical and dramatic concepts before the beginning of the programme in Córdoba.
SECOND MODULE – CÓRDOBA
Practical work within the Opera Studio
June 6–14, 2026
During the programme in Córdoba, conducting students will work directly with singers, collaborative pianist and faculty, developing a practical understanding of how opera is prepared and rehearsed in real conditions.
This second module is conceived as a practical immersion in the daily work of an opera production. Conducting students will:
Work in close collaboration with Maestros.
Rehearse alongside the singers participating in CIOS.
Gain practical experience in the musical preparation of the opera.
Observe and take part in the artistic process from within the rehearsal structure of the production
Particular emphasis will be placed on learning how to work efficiently and professionally with singers in rehearsal, both musically and dramatically.
Additional Key Opportunities
Opera Gala
Each conducting student will prepare the ensemble repertoire for the Opera Gala, conduct one concertante number, and receive a professional video recording for artistic and professional use.
Assistant Conducting Experience
Throughout the programme, conducting students will work as assistant conductors, leading rehearsals with singers and stage sessions while gaining practical experience in the discipline and communication required in professional opera.
Professional Rehearsal with Orchestra and Soloists
Each participant will be guaranteed at least 45 minutes of professional rehearsal time with orchestra and singers, in a real working session that will also be professionally recorded for future self-promotion.
